You Cannot Measure the Inside

Original artwork by Cristina Gabriela.

You Cannot Measure the Inside begins with something familiar: a bowl, a shape we recognise, an object whose capacity we think we understand. Inside it, a room opens. A small doorway lets light enter, and the familiar object becomes a place we can imagine ourselves inhabiting.

The painting explores how little the outside reveals of what is held within. A person occupies a visible space, but their memories, thoughts and inner life cannot be measured by its boundaries. The bowl gives this question a physical form: we can see its edges, but we can no longer be certain of its limits.

Soft transitions between shadow and light draw the eye into the empty interior. No figure tells us who belongs there. The room remains open for the viewer to enter, bringing their own sense of recognition, solitude or belonging.

What can we truly know of another person by looking from the outside?
