Ichnos
QUESTION
What remains of a presence after it has withdrawn from the visible?
A solitary soul, an empty chair and a fragment of red held within an atmosphere of memory, absence and silence.
DESCRIPTION
Original artwork by Cristina Gabriela.
Ichnos takes its title from the ancient Greek word for a trace, footprint or mark left behind.
Within a field of deep shadow, a pale anonymous presence remains beside an empty chair. A fragment of red cloth introduces the painting’s only colour—a material trace held between what is still visible and what has already disappeared. The surrounding atmosphere does not reveal a defined place; it behaves like memory itself, forming, dissolving and withholding.
The chair is not simply an object. It becomes evidence of an absence, while the cloth suggests something lived, carried or relinquished. The work does not explain who departed or what remains. It asks whether a presence can ever disappear completely, or whether every existence leaves something behind.
Through chiaroscuro, tenebrism and sfumato, Ichnos transforms light, shadow and colour into witnesses of an unseen human passage.
